POSTPONED to Aug 18, 10:30 a.m.: “Raphael’s Sistine Madonna: Art and Prophecy in the 19th Century” with Dr. Adele Ernstrom

Art historian Adele Ernstrom will give an illustrated talk on “The Sistine Madonna: Art and Prophecy in the 19th Century.” In a time of major social upheaval and religious ferment the initiators of the German Romantic movement “discovered” and celebrated Raphael’s Renaissance masterpiece, the Sistine Madonna, recently acquired by Dresden’s picture gallery, and largely unknown in the English-speaking world.
Anna Jameson brought to attention the implications of the work that she drew or suggested from her work on Marian imagery: implications for theology, for the civic nullity of married women under Common Law, and for mothers under slavery.

L’historienne de l’art Adele Ernstrom donnera une conférence illustrée sur « La Madone Sixtine : art et prophétie au XIXe siècle ». À une époque de bouleversements sociaux et d’effervescence religieuse majeurs, les initiateurs du mouvement romantique allemand ont « découvert » et célébré le chef-d’œuvre de la Renaissance de Raphaël, la Madone Sixtine, récemment acquis par la galerie de peinture de Dresde et largement méconnu dans le monde anglophone.
Anna Jameson a attiré l’attention sur les implications de l’œuvre qu’elle a tirées ou suggérées de son travail sur l’imagerie mariale : implications pour la théologie, pour la nullité civique des femmes mariées sous le régime de la Common Law et pour les mères esclaves.
