We all have our favorite activities to recuperate at this time of year\, including nights spent reading a good book or on the couch with a film that is relaxing and thought-provoking.  Our service topic this Sunday\, January 14th is inspired by watching such a film.  The 2014 Woody Allen film\, Magic in the Moonlight which\, when seen\, brought up many personal memories when on the roller coaster journey of spirituality\, including deep questioning\, skepticism\, and angst\, as well as a desire for reverence\, magic\, and transcendence.  In the spirit of a “Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning\,” let us reflect and share our own personal stories of belief formation\, non-formation\, and/or transformation with Amy Panetta\, Service Leader. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nL’hiver est une période merveilleuse pour se reposer et se ressourcer. DESCRIPTION:On or near the first Sunday in January\, many Unitarian Universalist congregations hold a ritual to bid farewell to the old year\, and to release it. \nIn the words of Rev. Elizabeth Harding\, “The fire communion separates the end of the year from the beginning\, helping us to put in perspective the joys and sorrows\, the changes and transitions\, the ups and downs of the year. It’s a half-way point in our church year\, but a celebration of the outside calendar’s year’s end and year’s beginning.” \nIn a ceremony of the burning bowl\, people are invited to write down write down words\, or a phrase\, to sum up what they wish to release before entering the new year. The sun in our Northern Hemisphere at Winter Solstice is “reborn” and\, at the same time\, the biblical birth of Jesus of Nazareth\, the son of Mary is retold and celebrated. But how does this nativity story fit within the context of an evolving cosmology that\, according to experts\, is 13.7 billion years old? Let us wonder and marvel at this ever-evolving\, interdependent web of life together. \nThis candlelit service will feature plenty of seasonal singing followed by a potluck. (No service in North Hatley.) \nPlease help support Amnesty International’s campaign for the release of unjustly imprisoned human rights and environmental activists around the world. We will have petitions to sign\, as well as letters to sign and mail. With all our voices together\, we CAN make a difference. \nCome anytime during the day; between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. there will be free pancakes\, and tea and treats throughout the day. More than 25 Townships authors and their books will be there. (Version française suit) \nAs neuroscientists learn more about the brain\, they acknowledge that human memory is both slippery and hard wired. Gabriella Brand speaks of the role that memory can play in our daily existence. By consciously forging and cultivating positive memories can we bring greater meaning to our lives and to the lives of others. \nGabriella Brand is an educator\, author\, linguist\, and counselor.  Her writing appears in The Christian Science Monitor\, the Globe and Mail\, and in over fifty literary publications.  She teaches languages and writing in the OLLI program at the University of Connecticut. After eight years in Senegal\, Jonathon will also share the flaws of humanitarian aid and the lack of male support in villages and from governments\, but how neither can hold back the integrity\, commitment and successes of these amazing women. (version française suit) \nWaterforAfricanWomen.org\, Huit ans plus tard\, avec Jonathon Ellison. \nJonathon fera le point sur les efforts de l’UUEstrie pour aider les femmes à créer des jardins maraîchers\, à gagner un revenu stable et à créer la sécurité alimentaire en Afrique de l’Ouest.
