DESCRIPTION:It’s always distressing and dangerous when hateful authoritarian ideologies grip a culture\, and it’s not always clear what an ordinary person should do. In this group discussion of the anti-Nazi nun Maria Restituta Kafka\, we will use the dramatic example of her life to spark some reflection on our own lives: What realistic options do ordinary people have\, if we don’t like a hateful or authoritarian trend – locally or globally? What kind of difference can we realistically hope to make? What resources do we have to draw on? Aaron will offer a quick reflection on the cultural traditions related to All Souls Day\, within the larger frame of human history: we as a species have been doing our best to honour our dead for a very long time\, and the way we do it says a lot about us. Then\, as UU Estrie often does\, we will invite people to share something if they like – in this case\, a few words about a departed person\, pet\, etc\, who is still important to you in some way. It’s a moment to learn a little about each other\, and to consider what memory and memorial mean to us. \n—— \nCe dimanche\, nous soulignerons la Toussaint en réfléchissant ensemble à l’importance de la mémoire et du mémorial. Aaron offrira une brève réflexion sur les traditions culturelles liées à la Toussaint\, dans le cadre plus large de l’histoire humaine : en tant qu’espèce\, nous faisons de notre mieux pour honorer nos morts depuis très longtemps\, et la façon dont nous le faisons en dit long sur nous. DESCRIPTION:Two “Water for African Women” talks by Magnabaou Mame-Boye Diédhiou from Senegal\, on Humanitarian Aid\, Humour\, and A Diola Woman’s Perspective. “Let’s drop failed aid policies and help our mothers and daughters to shine.” \nAgnabaou Mame-Boye Diédhiou hails from La Casamance in the south of Senegal\, and is the country director for UUEstrie’s initiative WaterforAfricanWomen.org. Mame-Boye will share her own experiences around the challenges of humanitarian aid in West Africa. She will address the local realities of why so many women still carry the burden of Africa on their shoulders\, how some aid keeps women in poverty\, and how examples of women succeeding can turn foreign aid policy on its head. \nMame-Boye has recently arrived from Senegal with her two little boys and her husband Jonathon Ellison\, the president of WfAW. Mame-Boye will share her own experiences around the challenges of humanitarian aid in West Africa. DESCRIPTION:October 2nd marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.  In his honor\, the International Day of Non-Violence is commemorated.  The United Nations  established this occasion in order to “disseminate the message of non-violence\, including through education and public awareness” which reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace\, tolerance\, understanding and non-violence.”  As Gandhi’s well-known words ring out\, we ask ourselves: How will we be the change we wish to see in the world? \nJoin us for a potluck after the service with Rev. Carole Martignacco. She will also be giving an informal poetry reading. Please bring dishes to share.\n~~~~~ \nLe 2 octobre marque l’anniversaire du Mahatma Gandhi. En son honneur\, la Journée internationale de la non-violence est commémorée. The last part goes straight downhill to the water level. Chemin\nde Ruisseaux is the last road to your right before you hit the Highway\n55. There is a parking lot at the Marsh which is across the street from\nthe entrance to the trail. Il y a un parking en face de l’entrée du sentier.
