I am sure I’m not alone in this; it’s one of the challenges of trying to talk about belonging\, how it creates complicated connections between our inner landscape\, the world we find ourselves in\, and the worlds we are attempting to bring about.” – Rev. Gitlitz \nKaren Fraser Gitlitz (she/her) is a white\, cis-gendered woman of northern European ancestry. Karen has served as a Unitarian Universalist minister since 2008 and a professional Art Therapist since 2023. Karen and her partner\, musician and composer Paul Gitlitz\, now make their home on the Saanich peninsula on southern Vancouver Island\, BC\, the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. Karen keeps connected to congregational life through her work as Coordinator of the Meaning Making Project\, this year offering 8 monthly theme packets and worship services to 15 Canadian UU congregations. Karen is also developing her private art therapy practice under the banner of Creative upWelling Art Therapy and a Community Ministry focused on the interconnections between the arts\, spirituality and social justice.

DESCRIPTION:It’s always distressing and dangerous when hateful authoritarian ideologies grip a culture\, and it’s not always clear what an ordinary person should do. In this group discussion of the anti-Nazi nun Maria Restituta Kafka\, we will use the dramatic example of her life to spark some reflection on our own lives: What realistic options do ordinary people have\, if we don’t like a hateful or authoritarian trend – locally or globally? What kind of difference can we realistically hope to make? What resources do we have to draw on? And if we do speak our minds\, or act in line with our consciences\, what might the real costs be? \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nIl est toujours pénible et dangereux que des idéologies autoritaires et haineuses s’emparent d’une culture\, et la conduite à tenir pour un citoyen ordinaire n’est pas toujours évidente. Please come prepared for the weather as we will remain outdoors\, rain or shine. \nFollowing the service\, there will be the “Pledge lunch” where the board will present a draft budget and distribute this year’s pledge forms.  \n—–\nTradition annuelle à l’UUEstrie\, on se retrouve dans le stationnement de l’église pour placer et danser autour du mât de mai aux rubans colorés. Célébrer le cycle de la vie et l’arrivée du printemps. \nCe sera un service extérieur. How can we disagree with that? \nBut when we’re face-to-face with someone very different from us\, be it a difference of race\, gender identity\, political stance\, educational background\, or economic situation\, it can be a challenge for us to embrace that person’s full dignity and worth.    \nWorking as an interfaith (non-proselytizing) Street Pastor taught me just how deep our judgements go – and how rewarding it can be at those times when we release our social programming and welcome the holy. \n~~~~~~ \nLe premier des sept principes de l’Unitarisme Universel est la reconnaissance de la valeur et de la dignité intrinsèques de chaque personne. Comment pourrait-on être en désaccord avec cela ? \nMais lorsque nous sommes face à quelqu’un de très différent de nous – que cette différence soit liée à la race\, à l’identité de genre\, aux convictions politiques\, au niveau d’éducation ou à la situation économique – il peut être difficile de vraiment embrasser toute la dignité et la valeur de cette personne. \nTravailler comme pasteur de rue interconfessionnel (sans visée de conversion) m’a appris à quel point nos jugements peuvent être profonds – et combien il peut être gratifiant\, dans ces moments où l’on parvient à relâcher notre conditionnement social\, d’accueillir le sacré.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the rich history of jazz in Southern Quebec. Born in New Orleans and nurtured along train routes\, jazz took hold in Montréal\, Canada’s jazz capital. From the jazz clubs of Little Burgundy\, touring musicians swept through the Eastern Townships\, bringing their high-energy\, syncopated rhythms and catchy melodies to our quaint towns.  Together\, we’ll dive into the stories of legendary musicians like Oscar Peterson\, iconic venues\, and the cultural context that shaped the region’s unique jazz heritage – one that is steeped in emotional expression\, creativity\, struggle\, and pushes the boundaries of inclusion. \nRejoignez-nous pour explorer la riche histoire du jazz dans le sud du Québec. Né à La Nouvelle-Orléans et développé le long des lignes de chemin de fer\, le jazz s’est imposé à Montréal\, capitale canadienne du jazz. Depuis les clubs de jazz de la Petite-Bourgogne\, des musiciens en tournée ont parcouru les Cantons de l’Est\, apportant leurs rythmes syncopés et énergiques ainsi que leurs mélodies entraînantes à nos charmantes villes. Ensemble\, nous plongerons dans les histoires de musiciens légendaires comme Oscar Peterson\, de salles emblématiques\, et du contexte culturel qui a façonné l’héritage jazz unique de la région – héritage imprégné d’expression émotionnelle\, de créativité\, de lutte et qui repousse les limites de l’inclusion. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nAmy Panetta\, MA\, currently a Lay Chaplain and regular speaker at UU Estrie\, is a music educator and ethnomusicologist.  She provides engaging talks and discussions to the community\, as well as in conferences regarding her interdisciplinary academic interests.  With a jazz-loving upbringing in New Jersey\, one of Amy’s academic interests includes the Italian American influence in jazz. A seasoned music educator with over 20 years of experience\, she teaches piano and instrumental students in both Quebec and Vermont. Amy holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a concentration in piano from Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania and a master’s in Ethnomusicology from the University of Limerick\, Ireland. \nAmy Panetta\, MA\, actuellement Aumônière laïque et conférencière régulière à UU Estrie\, est une éducatrice musicale et ethnomusicologue. Elle propose des conférences et discussions captivantes à la communauté\, ainsi que lors de conférences concernant ses intérêts académiques interdisciplinaires. Élevée dans l’amour du jazz au New Jersey\, l’un des intérêts académiques d’Amy inclut l’influence italo-américaine dans le jazz. Éducatrice musicale chevronnée avec plus de 20 ans d’expérience\, elle enseigne le piano et les instruments aux étudiants au Québec et au Vermont. Amy est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en éducation musicale avec une concentration en piano du Lebanon Valley College en Pennsylvanie et d’une maîtrise en ethnomusicologie de l’Université de Limerick\, Irlande.

DESCRIPTION:The late United States Congressman John Lewis used to urge people to “make good trouble.” When and where has good trouble appeared during hard times in human history? We’ll look at some old myths\, and more recent stories of mischief and disruption.  \nLe regretté membre du Congrès américain John Lewis exhortait les gens à « semer de troubles ». Quand et où de tels troubles sont-ils apparus lors des périodes difficiles de l’histoire humaine ? Nous examinerons quelques mythes anciens et des histoires plus récentes de méfaits et de perturbations. \nReverend Janet Parsons is the minister of the Gloucester (Massachusetts) Unitarian Universalist Church\, where she has served for the past 10 years. Prior to this ministry\, Janet worked as an affordable housing specialist\, and raised two sons. She is proud of her Canadian heritage\, particularly in these times. \nLa révérende Janet Parsons est ministre de l’Église unitarienne universaliste de Gloucester (Massachusetts)\, où elle œuvre depuis dix ans. Auparavant\, Janet a travaillé comme spécialiste du logement abordable et a élevé deux fils. Elle est fière de son héritage canadien\, particulièrement en ces temps difficiles.

En ces temps étranges et difficiles\, ce service explorera quelques leçons apprises de nos voisins\, les oiseaux. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nHeather is a Unitarian Universalist\, minister\, serving as support staff to New England congregations in the United States through the Unitarian Universalist association. She is delighted to be back to lead worship in North Hatley for the third summer in a row. \nHeather est une pasteure unitarienne universaliste. Elle accompagne les congrégations de Nouvelle-Angleterre aux États-Unis par l’intermédiaire de l’association unitarienne universaliste. DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the Weller Farm hangar/dance hall. After a brief welcome and introductions\, participants can explore interest groups and activities highlighting the theme of self-sufficiency: from homesteading and organic gardening to innovative projects like pond construction\, drone programming\, and small-aircraft design. \nAt noon\, we’ll come together to share a potluck picnic\, either outdoors in the picnic area or indoors in the hall\, depending on the weather. \nPlease bring: \nA dish to share for the potluck \nFolding chairs (for mealtime and also useful for resting\, if needed) \nCuriosity and questions! \nAlso available on site: U-Pick garden and orchard. \nWe are especially fortunate to be joined by our current WWOOFer*\, Agnas from Hungary\, who brings a wealth of knowledge in fields ranging from electrobiology and plant science to laser technology. She will also share her personal story of growing up in Hungary\, first under Soviet influence\, through the democratic transition into NATO membership\, and into the challenges of the present political climate. \nIn addition\, it’s worth remembering that Unitarianism itself originated in 16th-century Transylvania\, then part of Hungary. Agnas may be able to answer questions about that historical connection as well. \n*For those who don’t know: A WWOOFer (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms volunteer) is a traveler who helps on organic farms in exchange for room\, board\, and learning experiences. The Weller family has hosted WWOOFers from all over the world\, making this gathering a unique opportunity for cultural exchange\, learning\, and conversation. \nJoignez-vous aux membres et ami·e·s des Églises UU de Derby Line et de North Hatley pour une rencontre spéciale à la ferme Weller. SUMMARY:Sept 7th\, 10:30 a.m. Water Communion d’Eau with Amy Panetta\, Lay Service Leader
DESCRIPTION:Water Communion is a Unitarian Universalist ritual first created in 1980 by two Unitarian ministers in Michigan as a meaningful way of celebrating shared community.   Please join us for this special September UU Estrie ritual where each person is invited to bring water or use the water provided.  When these waters are poured into one common bowl\, they symbolize how our individual journeys flow together into one UU Estrie faith community.  You are also invited to share about how water has meaning to you\, share about a special body of water\, or read/recite a poem about water.   \nThis service will feature the “Time for All Ages” segment where children and families are urged to sit up front at the beginning of the service and after this segment\, children are invited downstairs to enjoy activities relating to water.  If you know that you will have a child(ren) that will be attending\, if possible\, please let Amy know at communications@uuestrie.ca by the end of the day on Sat.\, Sept. 5th. \nLa communion de l’eau est un rituel unitarien universaliste\, créé en 1980 par deux ministres unitariens du Michigan\, afin de célébrer la communauté. Joignez-vous à nous pour ce rituel UU Estrie spécial de septembre. Chaque personne est invitée à apporter de l’eau ou à utiliser celle qui lui est fournie.
