DESCRIPTION:Art historian Adele Ernstrom will give an illustrated talk on “The Sistine Madonna: Art and Prophecy in the 19th Century.” In a time of major social upheaval and religious ferment the initiators of the German Romantic movement “discovered” and celebrated Raphael’s Renaissance masterpiece\, the Sistine Madonna\, recently acquired by Dresden’s picture gallery\, and largely unknown in the English-speaking world.\nAnna Jameson brought to attention the implications of the work that she drew or suggested from her work on Marian imagery: implications for theology\, for the civic nullity of married women under Common Law\, and for mothers under slavery. \nDimanche 18 août\, à 10 h 30.
